Raw Food for De-Stressing – The Natural Way!

Top 5 Raw Food Superfoods or Herbal Supplements for De-Stressing:

Raw Cacao - Food of the Gods

Raw Cacao – High in magnesium, anandamide and tryptophan, the raw cacao bean is know to enhance one’s mood and induce a feeling of well-being and happiness. You can use it in powder form to add to a smoothie or try the raw cacao beans on their own.

Maca Powder – Maca is a root that comes from South America and has a taste like chicory, similar to coffee. But unlike coffee, it doesn’t contain caffeine. It is known to regulate the hypothalamus gland’s production of cortisol, the stress hormone. Maca is also well known to be a potent aphrodisiac…and for that alone can relieve stress!

Yerba Mate – This Superfood is brewed as a tea and is known to produce clarity of mind and provide smooth and sustained energy. It is a great healthier alternative to coffee. Improvement in mood, especially in cases of depression, often follows drinking this tea.

Kava Kava – Kava is a native to the Pacific Islands and is known to be the best natural plant for relieving anxiety (with the exception of opium). It has natural relaxing qualities as well as mood-elevating and pain-relieving effects. I personally use Kava Kava for long-haul flights; it gives me a nice happy feeling and is a much healthier alternative to alcohol!

Dark, Leafy Greens – Edible greens such as kale, spinach, bok choy and watercress can also help reduce stress. The natural green color in these foods helps to balance the heart chakra. Remember that natural color vibrations have a healing effect on the body too! Greens are also high in Vitamin C which is a natural anti-oxidant. Did you have your Green Smoothie today?

Raw Food, Detox & Healthy Living in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur is a popular travel hub within South East Asia, but did you know it could also be a place to find organic vegan, vegetarian and raw food too? Next time you pass through KL, consider staying a day or two and take advantage of some nice healthy options that the city has to offer.

A Healing & Metaphysical Oasis

A Healing & Metaphysical Oasis

The Bukit Bintang area is a great place to start. Unwind from your travels with a yoga class or meditation at the Lightworks Metaphysical Shop.

Different workshops are held weekly so be sure to check their online schedule. Reiki, Tarot Card and other forms of Energy Healing are also available. They have a very good selection of New Age books, music, DVDs and crystals as well.

I occasionally offer Raw Food, Superfood and Iridology Talks and Classes at Lightworks throughout the year.

Check my schedule to see when I may be there next!

Lightworks Metaphysical Shop, 19 Jalan Mesui (Off Jalan Nagasari) Kuala Lumpur
www.lightworks.com.my

If you walk around the corner from Lightworks towards BB Plaza, you will pass right by some of the best fresh fruit vendors in Kuala Lumpur, and maybe even in all of Malaysia. Don’t miss your chance to try the durian. Yum!

Vegan Bread at Woods Bio Marche

Vegan Bread at Woods Bio Marche

When you get to Bukit Bintang, turn right and walk down the road just 150 meters towards the Low Yat Mall. On the right-hand side you will see Woods Bio Marche Macrobiotic Restaurant. This is a great option for vegan and vegetarian food. There is one raw food salad on the menu – the ‘5-energy salad with miso dressing,’ but mostly this is a cooked food restaurant. The restaurant also has a small shop which sells organic dried fruit, seaweeds, nuts, seeds, beans, Bragg’s Raw Apple Cider Vinegar and fresh organic fruit and vegetables.

Well worth a visit for sure! They also have locations at Bangsar and Bukit Kira.

Middle Eastern Bliss

Middle Eastern Bliss

Still in the Bukit Bintang area, you can walk in the other direction back towards Lot 10 Mall. In the basement of Lot 10, there is supermarket where you can buy all types of dried Arabian dates. You will find them on display near the fresh fruit and produce area. Choose from Mariami, Piarum and Mozafati dates from Iran, Harmoni dates from Egypt and Medjool dates from California, USA. Now that is some serious raw food bliss!!

Across the road from Lot 10 on Bukit Bintang, there are several Middle Eastern restaurants where you can enjoy some really yummy salads. My personal favorite is the Tarbush Restaurant with ‘Arabic & Lebanese Cuisine to Satisfy All Your Senses.’ Love it!

Lee Yen, Jennifer & Callie - Girl Power!

If you have more time, make a trip out to the Mid Valley Mall. There you will find a fantastic organic store called Just Life Shop. This place is awesome. Full of organic produce, teas, dried foods, cleaning products, body products, books and more, this place is like a Disneyland for health advocates. Take the train or a taxi to Mid Valley, then walk through to the Gardens which is a smaller mall next door. You will find Just Life on the Lower Ground Level.

The staff at Just Life are so friendly and also highly knowledgeable. Their organic produce comes from local farmers and you can even arrange to visit the farms yourself. There are several locations throughout Kuala Lumpur and also in Penang – check their website for details.

Yogi Tree Cafe - Wheatgrass Yeah!

Yogi Tree Cafe - Wheatgrass Yeah!

Also in the Gardens Mall is a nice little healthy restaurant called the Yogi Tree Cafe. If you have been hanging out for some fresh wheatgrass juice, then go straight to Yogi Tree!

Start with a fresh wheatgrass shot and chase it down with a freshly made juice – like the Peak Performer with grapes, pear, apple & pineapple. They have a good selection of smoothies and salads as well.

Rainforest Juice o.m.g. SO good!

Rainforest Juice o.m.g. SO good!

About a 10 MYR and 10-minute taxi ride from Mid Valley is the Bangsar Village Shopping Mall. In there you will find Country Farm Organics Restaurant and Store. This place is ok – they have a good selection of produce and products, but the restaurant did not ‘wow’ me. I wouldn’t go out of my way to get back there, but if I happen to be in the area, I would definitely stop in for a ‘Rainforest Juice’ (fresh wheatgrass and green apple juice). That is a great combination!

In the store, they have organic pet foods and a special gluten and wheat-free section.

For detox and cleansing in Kuala Lumpur, I would definitely recommend a visit to Dr. Chan at his Natural Health Clinic in the Pertama Complex. Especially if you are looking for a specialized heavy metal detox program, Dr. Chan is the man to see. He uses German technology to test for heavy metal toxicity and makes homeopathic remedies based on the test results. Dr. Chan works with a trained dentist in KL for safe removal of amalgam fillings. If you have had a lot of vaccinations or have a lot of dental work, you should seriously consider visiting Dr. Chan.

NEW! Here’s an awesome Raw Food Malaysia update…there is now a detox and raw food delivery service in Kuala Lumpur! Whether you are passing through on holiday or a resident looking for healthy raw food delivery, this place is for you. I know I’ll be hitting them up the next time I’m in KL! Check it out: Delicious Detox Delivery, Malaysia.

I hope you enjoy your time in Kuala Lumpur, and remember that every destination can be a healthy and fun destination! You may even meet more like-minded souls!

Are you eating Processed Foods? Improve the quality of your food, your health & your life!

It doesn’t matter how industrialized we’ve become in this modern world today, we are still organic beings that come from the earth. Our body needs foods from the earth in order to be balanced, healthy and pure. If you do not eat such foods, you cannot expect your body to give you any less than unexpected results. Don’t be angry at your body for not functioning well on devitalized foods – it was never designed to do that!

Quality in Food adds to Quality of Life.

Healthy Fridge = Happy Belly

Healthy Fridge = Happy Belly

It is difficult to control what you eat in restaurants, but you can control what you bring into your home. Try as much as you can to only bring in organic, natural foods with no additives, colorings or chemical preservatives. Even reducing the amount of these that you consume can make a huge difference to the body.

Many of my clients say to me, ‘Well, I don’t eat processed foods.’ I can tell you that EVERYONE is eating processed food!! Milk, cheese, yogurt, bread, meat, canned soups, airplane food, inorganic coffee, crackers, biscuits, white sugar, white rice, frozen foods, oyster sauce, mayonnaise and wasabi peas are ALL processed foods, just to name a few.

It’s important that you start to understand exactly what you are putting into your body.

You are worth it!

You are worth it!

Some of the items that I have in my kitchen for preparing foods are sesame seeds, flax seed, goji berries, mung beans, lentil beans, wheat berries, barley kernels, almonds, dates, dried apricots, sundried tomatoes, honey, cashews, cayenne pepper, cold-pressed olive oil, nutritional yeast, raw apple cider vinegar, fresh herbs, garlic, ginger and lime. Do you see the difference?

Every time you go shopping, always try to make a slightly better choice that is more natural, whole and pure.

Remember, if you don’t spend your money on your food you will spend it on a doctor! As the father of modern medicine Hippocrates said himself, ‘Let your food be thy medicine and thy medicine by thy food.’

If you are interested in learning more, this is a great series of books published by the Consumer Association of Penang that cover such topics as:

  • What’s in your Bread (Did you know that human hair is added to bread??)
  • How Toxic is Your Cup of Coffee (Did you realize that the coffee crop is the most heavily chemical sprayed crop in the world??)
  • Is MSG safe? (Are you aware of all of the foods that contain MSG, including some baby formulas??)

This is such a great raw food recipe – especially if you are trying to make a healthy dessert for non-raw foodists – believe me, they will be sold on raw foods after trying this fantastic creation! In fact, it really does taste Just Like Cheesecake!

This is a raw vegan dessert, and it really does taste Just Like Cheesecake!

When you make this at home, you might want to double the recipe and make 2 cheesecakes at once – they tend to preserve fairly well in the freezer and it saves you having to make it twice! I learned how to make this myself at the Raw Food Class offered by the Spa Resorts in Koh Samui, Thailand. Now you can enjoy this recipe from the comfort of your own home!

There are 3 parts to making this raw cake: 1) the crust, 2) the filling and 3) the topping.

  • Macadamia Nuts – 2 cups (soaked overnight)
  • Dried Figs – 1/4 cup, chopped
  • Raisins (white) – 1/4 cup, chopped
  • Dried Coconut Flakes – 1/4 cup
  1. Sprinkle the coconut flakes along the bottom of your pie plate.
  2. Blend together the macadamia nuts, raisins and figs in a food processor and create the ‘crust’ with this mixture, carefully molding into an even layer on top of the coconut flakes.
  3. Refrigerate to let set while making the filling.

Raw Cheesecake Main Pie FILLING Recipe

Ingredients (choose organic if possible):

  • Raw Cashews – 3 cups (soaked overnight)
  • Freshly squeezed lemon or lime juice – 3/4 cup
  • Raw Honey – 1/2 cup

  • Himalayan or Sea Salt – 1/2 tsp.
  • Whole Vanilla Bean (take out the seeds)- 1/2 each
  1. Mix all ingredients together in a high-power blended (like Vita-Mix) or food processor.
  2. Blend until smooth and creamy.
  3. Pour this mixture evenly over the crust.
  4. You can add more fresh lemon or lime to taste, as desired.
  5. Place the pie in the freezer to let set while making the topping.

Raw Cheesecake Strawberry TOPPING Recipe

Ingredients (choose organic if possible):

  • Fresh Strawberries – 2 cups (can use frozen as a substitute)
  • Dried Figs – 1/2 cup, soaked overnight and chopped
  • Raisins (white) – 1/4 cup, soaked overnight and chopped

Raw Food Recipe for Raw Energy Balls – Fast & Easy!

Raw Energy Ball - Pure Heaven & Good for You!

Raw Energy Ball – Pure Heaven & Good for You!

This is something that I just threw together with what I had at home.. You can use pretty much whatever dried fruits you like as long as they are soaked in advance. Don’t be afraid to try your own combinations and see what magical blend you can create!

Raw Energy Balls are great for kids, perfect for traveling, and make a nice desert for the entire family. You can also bring them to a picnic or share with your work colleagues – even people who are afraid of the raw food diet seem to love them 🙂

Always check your nuts and dried fruits for any signs of mold before you soak them. If you see any white fuzz or obvious mold, it’s best to throw out the whole container and buy fresh again. Mold is the biggest thing to watch out for in dried fruits. With raw cashews, always split the cashews in half and check the insides – that is where the mold usually hides. Again, if you see any mold, get rid of them!

Raw Organic Energy Ball Recipe

Try to soak in a glass or wooden bowl!

Try to soak in a glass or wooden bowl!

Ingredients:

  • Raw almonds (peeled) – 1-1.2 cups
  • Raw dried dates (pitted) – 15-20 dates
  • Dries apricots – 8-10 apricots
  • Fresh tamarind (or tamarind paste) – about 1/3 cup (paste – 1/8 cup)
  • Virgin Organic Coconut Oil (3 Tbsp.)
  • Himalayan salt or sea salt, to taste
  • Organic Coconut Flakes
Once soaked, your dried fruits should look plump again!

Once soaked, your dried fruits should look plump again!

Instructions:

  1. Soak Overnight: 1 -1.5 cups almonds; 15-20 dates (pitted); 8-10 dried apricots
  2. After about 12-15 hours, rinse your soaked items and put aside.
  3. Take even amounts of almonds to date to apricot ratios and blend them up in your mini-food processor. I usually add a pinch of Himalayan salt or sea salt and about 2 tsp. of fresh tamarind to each batch. For the above amount soaked, I would add about 1/3 – 1/4 cup fresh tamarind in total.
  4. Mixing up some Raw Energy Love!

Mixing up some Raw Energy Love!

  5. Once the whole lot is blended, put it back into a bowl, and add about 3 Tbsp. virgin organic cold-pressed coconut oil.
  6. Mix all the ingredients thoroughly with a spoon. (Your blend should be nice and creamy with no chunks of fruit or nut. If it’s chunky, put it back in the food processor for another round.)
  7. Have another bowl ready with dried coconut flakes, in total about 1 cup of flakes.
  8. Take your blended mix and form into small balls with your hands, then roll the ball around the coconut flakes until covered. Continue all all your mix is gone.
  9. Energy Ball Love

    Energy Ball Love

  10. Let the energy balls refrigerate overnight or at least 6 hours just to form well and to allow the flavors to blend.
  11. Then, start to share your Raw Energy Ball Love!

Tamarind has a wonderful sweet and sour taste that adds a different element to the sweetness of the dates. (If you can’t find it fresh, try to look for a tamarind paste in your local Asian market.)

This recipe makes about 15 Energy Balls. Preparation time: About 1 hour.

In an earlier blog post, I talked about the Liver/Gallbladder Flush and outlined the recipe to naturally release gallstones from the liver. In this post, I want to share with you the recipe for a standard Liver Flush Detox Drink. Losing weight is just one of the many benefits in a raw food diet. Every day I get compliments on my skin – how clear and healthy it is, my hair – how natural and clean it looks, and my eyes -how clear and vibrant they are…these are things I never heard when eating a cooked and devitalized food diet. Also my energy has improved and I have more passion about the things I do in life, something that I never expected from raw foods. I feel more connected to my body and to Mother Earth. 10 Easy Ways to Make Time for Your Health

Your Health is Your Most Important Asset!

Your Health is Your Most Important Asset!

All information in this article is for educational purposes only.
It is not for the diagnosis, treatment, prescription or cure of any disease or health condition.

It’s a very fine balance trying to succeed in today’s busy, crazy world while also making time for good food, nutrition, exercise and fun. It’s all about the balance, right? But how do you draw the line? Where do you make the time?

I myself even struggle with this issue. I get so busy with clients and writing and everything else that I can go for ten hours without a break. I can be busier with my work now than I was even in Corporate America. Everyone feels the pressure today. So what do we do?

Here are 10 Easy Ways to Make Time for Your Health:

1. Take forced breaks.

Every time I get up for the toilet, I force myself to do one other task while I’m up. It might be making my salad for lunch so that when lunchtime comes I have it already prepared, or it could be using a dry skin brush for a few minutes to get my circulation going. I might do some stretching, anything so that I have gotten something out of the break besides a toilet run.

2. Plan ahead.

I give myself mini-goals throughout the day so I now where I should be with my schedule. I plan my day to include a walk or a massage or something that is just for me, so I know when that time comes I will stop, no matter how intent I am on my work.

3. Seek out help.

If I feel too overwhelmed, I look for help and try to delegate as much as possible. At first this seems like it will take even longer because of the time to explain, but in the long run it will save a lot of time.

4. Stop for a Meditation break.

Even for 5 minutes every day I stop, reflect and give myself a few minutes of just being, breathing and focusing on the now.

5. Look for healthy take-away.

Let’s be real – you might not have the time to make lunch or dinner even. But you can find healthy options for take-out or delivery. Don’t worry about the cost – if the $10 salad will stop you from eating the $5 hamburger, it is well worth the added cost. The healthier you are, the more productive you will be.

6. Always have healthy snacks on hand.

There are times where you might have to work a 14-hour day and those are the days where we don’t want you to lose your health in the process. Keep dried fruit, raw nuts, or fresh fruit around so when you start to get the shakes you can grab a healthy bite and keep going.

7. Try not to eat late at night.

Late night eating is the danger zone for most people. That is when emotional eating occurs and even more so when you are under stress. Be aware of that time for yourself; make a cup of fresh mint or ginger tea instead.

8. Don’t eat to please others.

Often we get caught into family and friends telling us what to eat. Listen to your body; eat what you want when you want. They will get used to it. You will feel better.

9. Plan a holiday.

It’s important to give your body time to recharge, rest, relax and rebuild. Be sure to make that time for yourself and eat healthy foods during your break so you return to work feeling restored and ready for the next onslaught.

10. Have fun!

Go out with friends, watch a funny movie, have a laugh – it’s the best stress-reducer there is!

Keep in mind that you are creating the health of your future with everything you do today. So make the time, even one thing every day, to invest in yourself. Realize that health is the biggest wealth there is…as long as you do a little bit every day you can stay on the preventative side and still have balance in your world!

Another reason to Avoid Processed Food – e.coli in Nestle cookies!

NEW YORK, June 19, 2009

Nestle Recalls Cookie Dough Over Illnesses

E. Coli Reported Along With Nearly 70 People Sickened And 25 Hospitalized

ecoli

(AP) Food maker Nestle USA on Friday voluntarily recalled its Toll House refrigerated cookie dough products after a number of illnesses were reported by those who ate the dough raw.

The company said the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control are investigating reported E. coli illnesses that might be related to the ingestion of raw cookie dough.

In a statement, the FDA said there have been 66 reports of illness across 28 states since March. About 25 people have been hospitalized, but no one has died.

The FDA advised consumers to throw away any prepackaged, refrigerated Nestle Toll House cookie dough products in their homes. Retailers, restauranteurs and employees at other food-service operations should also not sell or serve any of the products.

Nestle spokeswoman Roz O’Hearn said “this has been a very quickly moving situation,” adding the company took action less than 24 hours after hearing of the problem.

O’Hearn said the company will “cooperate fully” with the FDA’s investigation.

The recall includes refrigerated cookie bar dough, cookie dough tub, cookie dough tubes, limited edition cookie dough items, seasonal cookie dough and Ultimates cookie bar dough. It does not affect any other Toll House products.

E. coli is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause bloody diarrhea, dehydration and, in the most severe cases, kidney failure.

‘Wherever you’re at, you’ve got to make the commitment that you want to change.’

‘Most diseases begin with inflammation.’

‘A lot of people who wrote these books were not doing it themselves.’

‘Dairy products won’t do anything for you. They are not conducive to good health.’

‘We all have influence on our genetic expression through the power of our thoughts.’

‘There is a real problem with our perception of protein. We must realize that there are quality proteins in greens.’

‘Cells can speak to each other.’

‘The thoughts we entertain become a reality.’

‘Every time I see someone who looks exceptionally good, I say here’s my chance to learn something, and I ask them what they are doing.’

‘DNA is not destiny.’

‘Green juices are the Great Neutralizer.’

‘Don’t expect others to change their lives to accommodate what you’re doing.’

‘Live together with those not living our lifestyle. You don’t have to save or convert them. You don’t have to convince them for your own ego. There is more to life than what you are eating! Don’t talk about food all the time because it’s boring, and you will turn people off! You might think you know something about another person, but you don’t.’

‘I am grateful every day when I wake up and my name is not in the obituary that I have another day to go out and do what I love.’

‘We can change the world, one person at a time. I believe we have a Divine destiny. We can do this.’

‘Coffee is a disaster.’

‘I don’t think about food much anymore. My most important connection is my spiritual relationship with the Divine.’

‘I view myself as an instrument of fulfillment for other people, and we can heal people more not by talking about what they eat but by focusing on unconditional love – that is how we can heal the world.’

‘I am personally an 80-year old planning my future.’

‘Don’t focus on circumstances, stay focused on where you are going, it’s all about your vision, where you want to go. Don’t take your eye off the ball!’

‘When you tell me you’re ready, then we go to the next level.’
