How to Do a Coffee Enema at Home

And a Normal Water Enema too!

All information in this article is for educational purposes only.
It is not for the diagnosis, treatment, prescription or cure of any disease or health condition.

I’ve had a lot of requests from people asking how to do an enema at home and especially how to do a coffee enema. Even if you never do an enema at home, it’s always good to know how it’s done! Personally I always travel with an enema bag just in case…it’s a great thing to have for any unexpected constipation or even food poisoning while on the road. You can set it up in minutes as long as you have a towel rack to hang the bag from and a toilet of course!

An enema is done while laying on the floor, as opposed to a colema which is done on a colema board. Both use gravity-fed water, but with the colema board, when you feel the urge to release, you can simply ‘let go.’ With an enema, you have to first clamp the line shut, remove the tip, stand up to sit on the toilet, and then release. So there are a few extra steps involved. It seems complicated but it’s actually very easy! The key is to use the clamp and always be ready to stop the flow of water when you feel full.

How to Do a Plain Water Enema

Before doing a coffee enema, you should always do a plain water enema and wash everything out until the water runs clear. Then you are ready for the coffee. If doing a cleanse at home, you should also do at least one water enema per day during the fasting or juicing phase of your cleanse.

1. Prepare the Water.

Buy distilled water in advance and have it ready for your enema. You can heat up some of the water to body temperature. If the water seems too hot to touch, then it is too hot for the enema! In that case, add room temperature water to bring down the temperature of the water.

2. Set up Enema Bag.

There are a few different types of enema bags out there. My favorite is the type that looks like a hot water bottle – it has a wide top to add the water easily and clean afterwards. This type of enema bag comes with 2 different tips – one is smaller and is for rectal insertion. The other is larger with several holes and it is for vaginal insertion. For an enema, you only need the smaller tip. You can screw the tip onto the end of the water line. Then, be sure the clamp is shutting the line so no water can pass through the hose. Next, hang you enema bag on a towel rack. You want to be sure that the tip can still be inserted comfortably. If the bag is hanging too high, you won’t have any extra hose line to be able to insert the tip. The towel rack is usually more stable than trying to hang on a door knob. When you have the bag clipped and hanging, you are ready to add the water. Fill up the bag with distilled water warmed to body temperature. (If the water is cold, the colon will contract and things will not flow out so easily. If the water is too warm, the colon can relax too much and may become a bit ‘floppy’ after the enema. Body temperature keeps things just right.)

3. Prepare towels for Comfort.

Enema at Home Set-Up

Lay one towel flat on the floor and use another for a pillow so you are comfortable during the enema.

4. Place plastic colander in toilet (optional).

This is an option for the hard-core cleansers who like to check out their mucoid plaque or look for worms during their enema. You can have a pair of plastic gloves on hand as well as a pair of chopsticks to thoroughly investigate all. It’s best to buy the colander and chopsticks at a Dollar Store, and clean with hot water and vinegar every day during your cleanse.

5. Use olive oil or coconut oil for lubricant.

Have this ready in the bathroom so when you lie down, you have everything you need.

6. Play some music, turn the phone off and take a final pee.

Before you lie down to start your enema, empty your bladder by having a pee. Having any extra pressure in the bladder can make it harder to retain the water.

7. Fill the hose with water to remove air pocket.

Before you begin, it’s a good idea to clear the enema line from air. If you forget this step, the worst thing that will happen is you will get a big air pocket in your colon and have a nice release of gas with your exit water. When the bag is full of water, take the tip and aim it over the toilet. Release the clamp, allowing the water to flow. As soon as you see the water come out, clamp the line again. Now the line is full of water instead or air and you are ready to begin!

8. Relax!

Yes, your colon is now ready to be a 2-way street.. so don’t think about it being 1-way only! The water helps rinse out old, undigested, fermented, rotting fecal matter. Once that gunk it out of your system, your whole body works better. This is a great thing, so rejoice and be grateful for all the good you are about to do for your body! Take a deep breath and relax…it’s going to be ok!

9. Ready for Insertion!

Enema Clamp

Lie down on the floor, either on your right side or your back, whatever feels more comfortable (I prefer lying on my right side). Gently add some lubricant to the plastic tip and also to the rectal area. Take a breath, and on the exhale, insert the tip just enough (about 1 inch) so it rests comfortably inside the rectum. When you feel comfortable, release the clamp on the water line and let the water start to enter. Keep one hand on the clip so you can stop the flow at any time. As soon as you feel any pressure, stop the flow by clamping the line. Take a few deeps breaths and as you feel the water move deeper inside, release the line again to let more water flow inside. Repeat this as many times as you can. As soon as you feel the urge to release, clamp the line and remove the tip. Then stand up and sit on the toilet, releasing the water into the toilet.

10. Repeat until the Water Runs Clear.

Initially you may find it very difficult to retain any water. This is completely normal. As you become more comfortable with the process and as you go further into your cleanse, you will naturally find that you are able to retain more water before releasing. It is very normal to have to repeat this process a few times before you even go through one full enema bag (between 1 and 2 liters). It is recommended to repeat the process until the water runs clear. This may take 2 or 3 times of filling the enema bag, for a total of 2 to 6 liters of water.

How to Do a Coffee Enema

Before doing a coffee enema, you should always do a plain water enema and wash everything out until the water runs clear. Then you are ready for the coffee. It is absolute imperative that you use 100% certified organic coffee. Do not use anything less! Commercial grade coffee can damage the liver.

A coffee enema is an excellent way to clean the liver, but should only be done when the colon is clear. During a normal cleanse or at the end of a cleanse is a good time to do a coffee enema. Just doing one in the middle of eating a Standard American Diet (SAD) will not have a positive effect on the body. Please do not use this as a “magic pill” to try to clean your liver quickly. You can actually draw toxins into the liver if the colon is toxic, and then you will be doing more harm than good!

1. Prepare the Coffee.

Add 3 Tablespoons of ground organic coffee to 1 quart of distilled water. Let it boil for 3 minutes, then simmer for 20 minutes. Strain and cool until the water is at body temperature.

2. Retain for 12-15 minutes.

Use the same set-up as above, insert the 1 quart (strained) coffee and retain for 12-15 minutes. Lay on the right side during this time. Breathe deeply. Dr. Max Gerson found that all of the caffeine is absorbed from the fluid within 12 minutes.

3. Release.

That’s it! The coffee enema is an easy way to get the liver to dump bile and toxins quickly. It should be done only about 2 times per week during a cleanse, and definitely not any more than that if feeling unwell after the enema. Replenish your electrolytes after a coffee enema by drinking a fresh juice. Carrot, beet and celery juice is especially good after a coffee enema.

    Hi Jennifer,

I have a few tips for HARD TO RETAIN ENEMAS.

    1) For the coffee enemas I use an 8 ounce concentrated solution and I use an 8 ounce bulb syringe to instill the coffee enema.

    2) For the plain water enemas I use an enema bag or bucket a roller clamp (you can adjust the flow rate) and a douche nozzle (the smaller holes reduce water pressure and the nicely rounded flared tip makes the nozzle easy to insert and easy to retain without slipping out).

CAUTION : LADIES DO NOT USE THE DOUCHE NOZZLE FOR VAGINAL USE IF YOU USE IT FOR AN ENEMA. YOU CAN GET AN INFECTION FROM IT EVEN IF YOU CLEAN IT GOOD.

I suffer from sciatica and herniated discs. I am a firm believer of home colonics using a 4 quart enema bag/bucket or a COLEMA BOARD, and coffee enemas for pain relief and for everyday detoxing (from our very toxic world we live in). My question is what inexpensive herbal / tea enemas would you recommend for nerve pain and detoxing (I want to start and enema spice rack).

A 2 quarts chamomile enema is great for me, twice a month. In this hot summer season, I made it early in the morning, before a yoga session and before breakfast. It is for me a great detox procedure. Of course, is important to consult a doctor before (there are some side effects, and some people are allergic to chamomile).

    Hi Jennifer,
In answering another persons question (Laura’s) – you said that one needed to avoid drinking coffee while cleaning up the diet a few days before doing an enema, and I was wondering if that’s absolutely necessary in order to receive the most benefits and to avoid the negative effects of toxins? If yes, if I drink organic coffee, must it still be avoided?

      Dear Gail,

There has to be some cleanup of the diet before doing an enema otherwise you can put too much stress on the liver and other elimination organs. Coffee (both organic and non-organic) puts stress on the liver and also kills good bacteria in the gut. In short, there are no shortcuts if you want real health from this process. I hope that makes sense!

      My best,

You want the pill for your ill, but what’s your ill?! I can’t look into a crystal ball and give you dates and times of when you will be healed if I don’t even know what you’re trying to heal from! Natural health and healing doesn’t work like a prescription. And you’ve gotta talk about your diet too…of course.

Impatience and anger are signs of liver toxicity. When you are no longer feeling angry or impatient for small things that you should be able to handle, then it’s a good sign that your liver is starting to heal. The good thing about the liver is that it’s a very strong organ, in fact it’s the only organ in the body that can regenerate itself. So, there is hope for sure!

A recent 3D scan indicated that I have an enlarged semimal vesicle as well as a shrinking right side testis. Any idea on whether the enema will help and juice fasting for a month. Dear Andrew,

I would not normally advise coffee enemas for fertility or “infections”. Having the motivation to try natural remedies is wonderful, so well done there! However, if you are trying the wrong remedy for your conditions, you are going to end up feeling frustrated and still not achieve your goal of better health. I highly recommend that you see me for an Iridology consult and get you on the right track for your individual case.

    Hi Jennifer,
I stumbled across your post and thought you could maybe help. My body is currently very healthy. Saw a natural Dr. yesterday and everything is working great (finally!)! Anyway, decided I wanted to try coffee enemas, because I have read a lot about them, and feel like doing one occasionally would probably be a good idea. Anyway, I did some last night – 2 quick water ones to clear out, and then 2 coffee enemas for 15-20 mins each. The thing I’m struggling with is that I didn’t really feel anything, and don’t really feel a change after doing them. Every place i have read has made it sound like you feel light and very good after, but I don’t feel different at all. I didn’t have any real problems keeping it in either, and felt like I could keep going. Each enema was about 2 cups water, and for the coffee, I started slow by using 1 Tablespoon for the 4 cups of water. Any ideas why I didn’t feel anything or why it maybe didn’t work? Have you heard of this happening to others? Could it be that I didn’t add enough coffee? Or maybe my body is healthy enough it didn’t make that much of a difference? And also, how do you know how much water to use? I didn’t really feel it much, and just stopped at 2 cup, because I didn’t know how much to use. Is there some way to tell when you should stop adding water? Thanks so much for your help!

      Hi Marcia,

A cleansing diet is recommended before a COFFEE enema so that you don’t draw toxins back up through the colon into the liver. If you are doing a regular distilled water enema, you do not need a cleansing diet beforehand.

It’s most definitely wonderful that you are juicing daily at this time, but did you eat this way your entire life or did you have any processed, fried foods, refined sugar or food additives in your diet in earlier years? These types of inorganic materials and free radicals can build up in the colon over a number of years, even in a colon that moves daily. Think of the gunk that builds up in your sink – it does that even with normal debris being drained through daily, simply due to a natural build up over time.

It’s a good idea to eat a high fiber, alkaline diet for a few days before your coffee enema, and also avoid too many fats in the diet (even good fats like avocado or cashew nuts) as they can overwork the liver and you want the liver to be as relaxed as possible so it has the opportunity to produce a lot of bile during this cleanse.

A water enema should always be done before a coffee enema to ensure that the water is running clear before retaining the coffee solution. Anyone who misses that important detail in their instructions is clearly not a detox expert.

Good luck, and keep up the GREAT work!

      To your health,

      Jennifer

      Dear L,

Going to the bathroom every 2 weeks is a disaster for your immune system! You need to get your colon sorted asap. A clear water enema may provide short term relief but it will not solve the problem. Also, you definitely do NOT want to do coffee enemas if you have a history of constipation. The coffee will pull toxins from your colon up into your liver and you’ll be in even more trouble then!

I drink 8oz. of carrot apple kale juice before and after, but still feel worse after the enema.

My diet has been very clean for the past two years. I did start doing the Budwig diet a few months ago, maybe the high amount of flax oil in my diet is a factor. Any opinions?

Hello, Diane. I had the same effect – not much bloating, but a feeling of depletion, not feeling “right”, after an initial period of feeling great after the enemas.

Low minerals can cause this, in my opinion. For me the solution was to make sure I have been taking calcium and magnesium every day, esp. before the coffee enema, as well as consuming lightly salted water every day. These are electrolytes and there is no substitute. Also, and this is important, give yourself a boost with a healthy snack prior to the enema. It makes all the difference.

Also, I think that you are doing the enemas too often (3X/week) – unless you are under the care of a medical practitioner who has experience and understanding in this matter. Listen to your body! More of something is not always good. Don’t be scared to stop altogether for a week or so. Mineral depletion is the worst thing imaginable. Your body can’t heal when it is stressed in this way.

The very best of health to you.

      Jennifer Thompson says:

      Dear Victoria,

Coffee beans are one of the most heavily sprayed crops in the world with chemical pesticides. This is a known fact. Anytime you are doing an enema with ANY ingredient, your body will absorb whatever is in the enema VERY quickly. In fact, that is precisely why it’s recommended to use distilled water for enemas, because you DON’T want to absorb the chlorine or fluoride in normal tap water. Using ORGANIC coffee is key to prevent absorbing dangerous pesticides directly into your blood stream. Likewise, if you decide to use an herb, like red raspberry or milk thistle, it must also be ORGANIC if used in enemas.

If “all other websites” missed this crucial price of information, then it’s a HUGE red flag that they do not know what they are talking about. As someone with over 20 years of experience in the detox field, I can tell you that there are many people in this field who have no idea what they are doing (just like any industry I guess!).

Good luck and blessings to your health!

How is a one time use saline cleanse different from a cleanse like this? Where the enema drip is released by gravity, versus a squeeze bottle which used much less liquid than the drip bag appears to hold. Are there risks with the saline enemas? Are there benefits aside from the relief of constipation? I’m new to this, but eat relatively clean and don’t have regular BMs. I want something not only safe that gets the job done, but also with health benefits. The all in one enemas are so much more time efficient. Any thoughts you may have on the differences would be greatly appreciated!

      Hi Sara,

A coffee enema is completely different to a saline enema blast. Coffee enemas are designed to cleanse the LIVER.

A saline enema contains chemical laxatives in addition to saline; combined they have a blasting effect to clear out the immediate blockage in the colon. Think of it like blasting out the initial hole in a mine. You still need to dig out the entire mine after that! In short, a saline enema can give immediate relief to constipation, but they will not reverse chronic constipation. Note: If you do NOT have regular bowel movements, then you are suffering from constipation.

For chronic constipation, you need to go deeper into the mine (aka colon). In fact, over time…saline enemas will have LESS effect, in the same way that trying to take laxatives regularly has less effect over time. Why? Because you need to change the DIET to have long-term relief from constipation. That, and cleaning out the colon with a proper colon cleanse using herbs and foods that strengthen and heal the lining of the colon, naturally.

I hope that makes sense! Good luck – I’m excited for you to make lasting changes in your diet!!

      Jennifer Thompson says:

      Hi Laura,

The terms you are using can have very different meaning depending on whom you ask so let me explain what my definition would be!

A colon cleanse should be done first before messing with coffee enemas. Why? Because if your colon is filled with old gunk and toxins, you can actually pull them back into the liver with the cleanse. What if you are eating no processed foods? Well unless you have done that from birth, you have probably had junk foods in your body at some point in your life which means you are still a candidate for someone who needs colon cleansing. If you are 40 years old for example, that’s 14,600 days of eating. Let’s say you changed your diet 3 years ago and now eat “relatively healthy” (a relative term especially with someone like me!). That means you’ve got 1095 good days of eating and still have over 13,000 days of old gunk that most definitely builds up in the colon over time.

Once you get into the habit if regular colon cleansing with a healthy diet, you are on the path to real long-term positive change and success. That said, you still need to clean up your diet for a few days before this cleanse in order to have good effects. That means you need to minimize fats, eat a high fiber diet, eliminate alcohol and coffee and get your body alkaline. If you don’t, you simply increase the chance of your liver saying “No way” and you will likely stir up too many toxins and feel unwell after. Hey, your body does get a vote too! You may or may not drink alcohol and eat fatty foods since most people have their own definition of what a “clean diet” is to them.

Eating a high raw food plant-based diet with no alcohol and minimal fats before this cleanse is the “dietary cleanse” needed to prepare your body and liver for this cleanse. Even people who do this regularly should take out all fats (including avocado and cashew) the day of and/or before a coffee enema. The liver can create more bile to release toxins when there has been less fat metabolizing taking place.

      I hope that makes sense!

      My best,

      To your health,

      Jennifer

Thanks for your question! Actually, there is no “one size fits all” for how many enemas to do or how much cleansing to do. It’s kind-of like asking,”How often should I clean my house?” And the real question is: how dirty is it to begin with? Do you get where I’m coming from here?

You asked if some people use coffee enemas for preventative maintenance: the answer is YES. But, it’s NOT recommended to have a coffee enema in the middle of a toxic diet or lifestyle as a magic pill to take away the debauchery from the weekend. That won’t do you any good. Some people will do a coffee enema once a month, once every 3-6 months or even once a week, but those are people on a high raw food diet who have cleansed a lot on the past including colon, liver, parasite and heavy metal cleansing.

You also asked if people do coffee enemas for therapeutic reasons: the answer is also YES. But again, how much really depends on how dirty is your house??

The short answer is this: Every person is different because your strength and weaknesses are different than the person sitting next to you. When I see people for an Iridology session, I am able to create a personalized detox program that fits exactly for them and will be the right order of steps at the right pace for optimal healing. I hope that helps!

      My best,

      To your health,

      Jennifer

In your explanation of the coffee enema you refer to the body temperature and the enema solution temperature. Would it be beneficial for a rectal temperature to be taken prior to the coffee enema to determine what the coffee temperature should be?

      Hi Richard,

I can only speak from personal experience and say that I’ve always used the “testing the water by touch” approach and it has worked for me. I guess it’s similar to a mom putting her finger into heated baby formula, or putting a few drops on her wrist, to check the temperature before feeding to a baby. I’m sure you can be more technical and get an exact temperature, but it will be best to ask your medical doctor what that number should be. Good luck and happy enemas!

The temperature should be between 98 to 101 F. Not above 102. I use a candy thermometer with the long prong to test & adjust the water in glass pitcher before pouring into my enema bucket

You’re so cool! I don’t suppose I have read through a single thing like that before. So great to discover somebody with some genuine thoughts on this subject matter. Seriously.. thank you for starting this up. This web site is one thing that’s needed on the web, someone with a bit of originality!|

Since it takes considerable time to prepare the coffee for the anema,
is it o.k. to brew it the evening before and warm it up in the morning?

      Hi Sara,

My question would be: what are you eating, and can you improve your diet to help you go to the toilet naturally so you don’t need to do enemas while traveling? I travel with a blender so I can make Green Smoothies on the go, and that literally helps me “go”!

It tends to take me a long time to release all the fluid. Like, my body retains the ce. I use distilled water and 2-3tbs coffee per qt. Any ideas why this is happening?

Also, what do u do when traveling and might not have access to a private bathroom? I’m moving across country and might not have access… However, i need to do these every am due to issues with not being able to go and not being able to detox well (nerve damaged colon, nerve damaged bowel etc). Any advice?

      Hi Bee,

Try stretching after you finish your enema. Lift your left arm high, then your right arm, then both. Bend your waist from side to side and then rotate your hips and bend forward, then back. That can help release the water. It may be that you have a prolapsed colon. Long-term, you can repair the colon with diet and certain supplements such as alfalfa tablets. Squatting on the toilet (rather than sitting) can also help greatly with this condition.

      Blessings to your health,

      Jennifer
