Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead – Inspiring film, but is a 60-day juice fast safe?

Inspiring Film on Weight Loss

Wow! I was so inspired by this movie! Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead show 2 extremely overweight men do a 60-day juice fast, and the results are outstanding!

All information in this article is for educational purposes only.
It is not for the diagnosis, treatment, prescription or cure of any disease or health condition.

This documentary shows a real life regular Australian guy named Joe who, at 140 kg or just over 300 pounds, was sick with an auto-immune disease and a strange re-occurance of rash and hives. At 40 years old and feeling fat, sick and nearly dead, he finally decided to take his health in his own hands. Can you imagine, at only 40 years old, being so overweight and in pain from arthritis, that you have to use a raised toilet seat to even sit on the toilet? Or, maybe that’s already you? Then it’s definitely time for some change!

Yes, Joe took responsibility for his own health and decided to completely change his diet and lifestyle!

Joe Cross before his detox

He embarked on a 60-day juice only liquid fast and not only lost weight, but cleared the rash, gained energy and made a plan to continue with positive change after the detox.

In 60 days, he lost over 80 pounds.

It is phenomenal to see the transformation!

And, even better, Joe continued to make changes when he finished his detox. He started exercising, ate salads and juices, and after another 70 days, he not only maintained the original weight loss but lost another 20 pounds. He also managed to get off all medications – wow, now that is Mother Nature’s doctor at work for some real natural healing!

Along his journey of juice fasting and traveling across the United States on a road trip with the juicer set up to a battery in the back of his car, Joe met a lot of overweight Americans and many had different ideas on fasting. It’s worth watching just to see what they say!

Joe Cross after – transformation!

At one point, he meets Phil who is over 400 pounds and has the same skin rash condition as him. Phil gets inspired and eventually does the 60-day juice fast himself.

It’s really spectacular to see these normal people who were previously victims of fast food and prescription drugs and are now teaching people how to juice kale and apples! I love it!!

So, what about actually doing a 60-day juice fast yourself? Is it safe?

In the movie, both men get clearance from their doctors and also regular checkups during the fast. This is definitely a good idea, especially if you have never fasted before, are on any medications of any kind and especially if you are suffering from any medical conditions.

Was Joe constipated after his detox at all??

60 days is a long time to go without any bowel movements. The thing that Joe never mentions in the movie is whether or not he did enemas or colonics during his fast. Since he didn’t mention it, I doubt he did any. This does concern me, especially when I think of how toxic so many people are today and how they could easily lessen the effects of the detox reactions by doing a daily enema during their fast. I would also recommend certain herbs and supplements to support the body during the process.

Re-toxifying of Heavy Metals

The other issue that concerns me is that people doing a long fast with extreme weight loss can disrupt pockets of heavy metal accumulation in their body. Often times the body will safely store heavy metals in it’s fat cells. It’s a way for the body to try to protect itself from these toxic materials. If you have extreme weight loss in a short period of time, as the fat gets burned, the heavy metals have to move somewhere else…and they can potentially move into and do harm to the organs. In an Iridology reading, we can see if a person has the potential for heavy metal accumulation. It’s a good idea to get checked out, and to also consider doing a heavy metal detox as a follow-up to the juice fast. During the fast, it may also be a good idea to take zeolite as this is a natural chelator for heavy metals and toxins and can assist the body with the detox process.

I particularly like the doctor in the film, Dr. Joel Fuhrman. He had some great quotes:

  • Permanent results only come from permanent changes in diet and lifestyle.
  • You don’t get permanently well unless you permanently change the way you live.
  • Fasting can be used as a time where you re-train your taste buds. If it helps you with healthy eating thereafter, then it’s done it’s job.
  • 61% of the American diet today comes from processed foods (predominantly oils, sugar & flour).
  • 70% of the diseases that affect us now are caused by our life choices: how we exercise, if we smoke and what we eat.
  • Total cost of a heart attack: $56,424 USD. Total cost of juicing for 1 month: $420.

While Joe didn’t mention his bowel movements, some of the other people have mentioned theirs. I believe the woman when migraines told her husband after using the bathroom “Where did this all come from” Also these diets are all fiber and you are getting the proper amount of water, believe me. You are going to poop. A LOT.

There is no fiber in juice. Smoothies, yes…plenty of fiber; but juice…None! And 60 days with no fiber is a long time to go without a BM. Some people have mentioned that Joe actually did do daily enemas during his juice fast, but this was never mentioned in the film. It’s important for people to know that if they consider doing a long juice fast, they should be doing daily enemas as well. Thank you and blessings to your health!

Started with Dr visits, small changes to healthier eating, starting to become more active, no juicing. Lost 14pds over the last 2 weeks! Can’t wait to see what the future holds and hope my husband (who’s body and diet resembles Joe’s prebody/habits will follow in my footsteps!!! I’ve always had an internal picture of myself with square shoulder, strong, and healthy – I will be that person. I am that person. Thanks Joe and your team! – Lots of me to leave behind 🙂

Future looks bleak…can you help. Does your system work for Cohn’s? Your b4 photo is me…the Dr’s and nurses said I looked 9 mos pregnant. Swollen, and solid as a rock belly. It turns it is mainly Cohn’s inflamation. Now out on liquids only I am much smaller belly and lost 10 pounds. I feelJim better but am scared of the future. i’m on day 6 of my fast and i can’t believe how easy it is. i’ve already lost 13 lbs. i work from home, so its really easy for me to not have any distractions and keep my cravings at bay. i have juice for breakfast and then i just make a fresh juice on my breaks and lunch and then have another one for dinner. i’m drinking around 4-6 juices a day, mainly green vegetables with just one fruit thrown in to enhance the flavor. originally i was planning on doing this for one week just as a quick cleanse before embarking on a lifestyle change (including a trainer and new eating habits), but i’ve noticed an incredible difference with just the juicing– feeling really energetic, my skin looks better and the weight is falling off and all i’m doing is walking! i’m going to shoot for 1 month as i have a lot of weight to lose, and certainly could benefit from a heavy detox. previously i loved eating out, homecooked meals that were high in carbs and fat and lacking in everything else, and enjoyed plenty of wine and other adult beverages. hehe. i’m definitely in need of a reboot so i think 1 month would be really beneficial for me. and aside from being very overweight (5’7″, 244 lbs -started at 257), i don’t have any other ailments or illnesses so i think i should be fine. problem is, when i first started juicing, i was having regular bowel movements, but now i’m not. that can’t be healthy right? if the problem persists i’m afraid i’m not going to be able to continue on with this fast. 🙁 is there anything i can do to combat the constipation? i’ve been drinking green tea a couple of times a day, is that bad?

    Hi there!
If I remember correctly the doctor in the movie is not Australian, but American. Dr Fuhrman is amazing. I first saw him on a PBS special last year and decided to buy the package they were selling (book, dvds, etc.). The money also goes to funding PBS which I am a big supporter of. Anyways, I too was wondering whether or not Joe Cross used an enema or some type of herbal laxative. It seemed to me he didn’t. I just started my juice fast because I am a 29 year old female that has had psoriasis for years and now I have full blown arthritis. I can barely walk in the morning. I refuse to take any type of pharmaceutical. I did however take ibuprofen for the last three weeks because I was on vacation and the plane ride was killer. Too long sitting in one place. I ate pretty healthy on vacation, but I was still in a lot of pain. This was my last resort. I have not needed any ibuprofen the last two days of my juicing. I’m still sore, but I’m sure I need to detox all that toxic NSAID I had been taking. Also, no constipation. Hope it goes well from here!

Started my fast today and shared the documentary with my co-workers who are all excited to try the fast, including one very well respected physician! Our dietician said to be careful to get a juicer that gives you pulp and fiber that is necessary and also to limit the juices from fruit. She was interested to see how I did. Just had my labs done and I’m targeting my lipid panel. Will try this for 10 days and let you know! Not tired at all today and normally I come home and lay on the couch so interesting so far!

Day 2 was tough but by day 3 we figured out how to alternate the ingredients according to the days activities. Big hike we get lots of fruits for energy. Mostlyveggies juice but fruit for a nice sweet tast of berries and pineapple. Helps with the lulls in energy and feeling hungry. We are doing a 21 day fast. Will check back here on the end of week 1 and let you know how we are doing. We are feeling great now and know in another4 days we will be even better.

I also watch the documentary and the next day went out and got a Brevelle juicer from Macy’s and I’m now wrapping up Day 3. I hope my lack of energy goes away as it does for the huge majority of people after 3 to 5 days in. If I still have this lack of energy by day seven Ive got to change something. I really wanted to do 15 to 30 days. I can tell I’ve lost weight, I’m going to weigh myself after day five.
Can anyone give any advice on the lack of energy thing? I am so eager to get to the high-energy part of this!

Hi Hear, It’s great news that you are embarking on your juice fast…congratulations! As for the lack of energy, try to be gentle and patient with yourself and understand that this is a natural part of the detox process. When you are tired, rest. When you are thirsty, drink. The more you listen to your body, the better! As fatigue and brain fog start to pass, you will come into a clean, new energy and sense of joy like you never felt before. The fatigue is also a reminder of what NOT to eat, since the toxic foods are what cause more of a ‘cleansing reaction’ to begin with. Remember, you didn’t get to where you are overnight, so be patient. If you can make it to Day 7, I’m quite sure you will be feeling better and the fatigue will be a distant memory! All the best and blessings to your health!

After watching Joe Cross’ documentary 3 weeks ago I decided I needed to change my life style. I got on line and read juicer product reviews until I thought I would go cross-eyed. Ordered a good one but didn’t break the bank. I then got back on line and carefully read all about juice fasting – the pros and cons. I gleaned a lot of information as to what I need to do as a first time juicer and the pitfalls to avoid. I believe I’m ready to begin a new journey down the road to a healthier Me.

This is a healthy reboot plan for most people. Finding your BMR for the weight you want to be and eating those calories forever is the plan thats working for me. I’m down from 211 in April to 194 in July. I eat a mostly plant based diet and exercise around 30 min., 4-5 days a week. I’m 5’10 and age 60. I’m not starving & have 2000-2300 calories a day. I started logging every calorie when I started, but now know about how much to eat and don’t have to log it unless I see the scale move up. Its only been 4.5 months, but I think I can continue this even after reaching my goal weight of 180.

It’s incredibly wise to question any type of fast. Yes, it may work fine for some. Others may not be so lucky.
I tried a juice fast almost a decade ago. I felt fine for the first week. And then I got sick… and sicker, and sicker. I ended up in the hospital with several blood clots, and a pulmonary embolism. Fortunately I was at the top hospital in Chicago, and they determined that the clots were caused by the juicing.
I’m eating healthy these days. And yes, eating healthy is more expensive. But when you add up the savings of doctor/hospital bills – or even your life -it’s much cheaper to eat healthy.

The other important item to consider is that a lot of ‘so-called’ healthy foods are actually not healthy – many foods in health food stores contain MSG, Ribonucleotide, Disodium Guanylate, Disodium Inosinate – the latter 3 are known to cause an itchy rash, otherwise known as ‘ribo rash.’ Be sure to check your labels and watch for salty, savory foods. @ Jenna don’t mean to sound rude but many people who try this are unhealthy because of their habits. habits that are taught young. Don’t give your children juices but make more of their every day meals closer and closer to 50% fresh veggies and fruit. obviously that’ll take time and isn’t always easy but when they learn now, they can make healthier choices when they grow up

I was thinking about the bowel movement thing…In the movie actually the female that goes on the fast..says to stick close to a bathroom..cuz you will “go” a lot!! She even states that she thought she was cleaned out..but was wrong! So I was wondering what part of the movie does Joe say he wasn’t having bowel movements? Just because its liquid, and its micronutrients, I still think some sort of bowel movement would occur. I have done a lot of research and I am almost ready to try it out myself..The inspiration is that even if you cant do the whole 60 days..even just replacing a meal or two a day..or have a few days a week..the options are limitless with juicing! I plan on giving my kids fresh juice rather than store bought just so they can get all their fruit and veggies in just a couple of glasses..

As far as I recall, Joe did not mention anything about bowel movements or enemas or colonics during his fast. And I think this was his first detox he ever did. I’ve been doing fasting and detox for 15 years and have done countless cleanses, and have also assisted many others during their programs. Believe me, you will not be going to the toilet on your own after about 6 days unless you are taking extra herbal laxatives, and that is not a good idea to do unless being guided with support. With the level of toxicity an overweight person may have today, it is my professional opinion that doing a daily enema (at a minimum) should be incorporated into any long detox.

I have been a modified version of Joe’s plan in that I have a Vitamix and I’m making green smoothies. Victoria Boutenko has written several books about green smoothies and has testimonials from people who have gained vibrant health from them. The Vitamix retains all the fiber where juicing spits it all out. And the Vitamix is a snap to rinse out.

    HI Alison,
I was in the same situation as you are now. I had literally 5-10 dollars weekly for food and tried to eat very healthy. What I did was start my own garden, look to neighbors to see if i could help tend their gardens in exchange for fresh vegies and I did this all the while going to college full time and worked 3 part time jobs. To this day i will always have a garden, even if it’s only a flower pot of lettuce and herbs. Also, i went around town ( and still do) looking for fruit trees and pick my food (ask first) or exchange with the people if you have some fruit to exchange. luckily at college, the friendly people let me eat and take home every night what was left from the salad bar so I could eat as well. To this day I thank them daily in thought. this went on for about 4 years and now I help those in need whenever I can. you can and will find a way to do this,

    best wishes, Trinka

$100 a month?? Wow, that sure is difficult. That’s $25 per week. I can easily afford a raw food diet on $75-$100 per week. In fact, I find it fun to spend $10 or less a day on my food, and still enjoy an abundance of health! I often shop at farmers markets and local fruit and veggie shops where the prices are much cheaper than supermarkets. I don’t but a lot of nuts or seeds and I make all my own salad dressings. I never spend money eating out and I do not spend money on alcohol, cigarettes, take-away food, make-up, designer clothes, iphones or anything like that. My food is my investment for health and for feeling energetic, joyful and excited to be alive! 🙂

Its because some people will always have something bad to say when someone does good! The fact that he had doctors monitoring him at all times, and also monitoring the truck driver, speaks for itself! If people that went to school for 8+ years didnt think it was dangerous or unhealthy, than to me, that beats someone on a forum who has an opinion based on jealousy. No disrespect to any past or future comments that are on here, but I think the film and results speak for themselves. I agree 100% with you Teresa.

By the way, it was a fantastic documentary, and I too have been inspired. I will be starting my juice fast in 2 weeks.

Nothing about what they did was unhealthy. They both got all the nutrients/protein/HEALTHY fats/vitamins that they needed during the fasting process. Both lost significant amounts of weight and have kept it off, even after the ‘reboot’ phase was done and they were back to eating whole food. After detoxifying, both felt amazing. Joe was monitored weekly by one of the top nutritionists in the country. If it was so unhealthy, why did his cholesterol, weight, and blood pressure go down so quickly. Why did the disease that had plagued him for years suddenly go into remission? How do you find any of this unhealthy?

The body is a wonderful machine. Better than the timing on a Porsche. I would suggest before anyone does this that they watch the CD the Human Body how it works it’s amazing and gives one a much better understanding of just how synchronized it is and why it needs nutrition like protein, fat and vitamins…….juicing only is like running a car on fumes……it will chug along then quit and probably have a carborator problem in the end ……God bless all of your hearts, kidneys, etc.

Becoming severely obese or fasting? Not honoring one’s body as a temple, a sacred space for the soul, in my opinion, is unfair and unhealthy to oneself.
